Job Summary:
Operation of a variety of construction equipment and trucks used in construction, maintenance and repair activities and performance of a variety of skilled tasks on highway and heavy construction projects.

Minimum Required Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy construction equipment such as: backhoes, dozers, excavators, graders, and loaders.
  • Able to perform strenuous manual labor activities for the workday.
  • Hearing and speaking sufficient to answer the phone and communicate with employees and others.
  • Vision for reading and writing, to see clearly at all distances on construction sites, and at night.
  • Able to walk and climb around job sites and in and out of equipment where ground conditions and elevations are variable.
  • Able to kneel, crouch, bend.
  • Able to work in extreme weather, hot and cold.
  • Physical strength to carry and lift 60 pounds.
  • Reliable Transportation.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Perform all duties safely.
  • Safely operate equipment around coworkers, other working equipment, materials, open trenches, and other potential job site hazards. Ability to safely operate equipment to avoid damaging facilities or harming people surrounding the job site.
  • Operate heavy construction equipment such as, backhoes, dozers, excavators, graders, loaders, and brooms.
  • Operate small equipment and tools for site preparation to install underground utilities and general earthwork construction.
  • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; refer defects or needed repairs to the supervisor; perform operator servicing such as greasing of equipment before, during and after each shift. Clean equipment.
  • Ability to safely and correctly load, rig, and hoist material(s).
  • Able to judge material quantities being moved so that earthwork cuts and fills are efficient and stockpiles are well located.
  • Excavate, grade, and move dirt to complete work to technical standards set by engineering drawings or field survey markers.
  • Communicate and follow locational guidance when working jointly to move or set utilities and other objects.
  • Recognize soil stability conditions in order to plan and perform work so that slopes are stable.
  • Ensure proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Notify superintendent, foreman or safety director of any potential issues.
  • Backfill trenches with earth or other materials.
  • Knowledge of pipelaying practices.
  • May assist with training or supervising others.
  • Working knowledge and experience with GPS machine control is preferred.
  • Excellent attendance and timeliness.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Hours:

  • Regular hours are typically day shift hours; Monday through Friday, up to 60 hours per week, depending on season.
  • Overtime may be required during the busy season.
  • Occasional Saturday and/or Sunday work, as assigned.
